The way to the sea, Isle of Uist, ScotlandLocation introduction

Dramatic geological forces, combined with numerous ice ages and lately weather forces such as wind and rain, have all contributed in the creation of a chain of islands on the north west of Scotland known as Outer Hebrides or Western isles. This chain of islands stretches for more than 100 miles and is always in the mercy of the Atlantic Ocean.

Here, we will concentrate on the central part of this chain, the part that includes the isles of Berneray, north Uist, Benbecula and south Uist. All these islands are connected with causeways. Boggy moors and craggy hills rule the east side of these islands and make access simply impossible in parts. In fact, it’s hard to tell whether the moorland is sprinkled with lochs or the sea is dotted with islands. On a sunny day, the landscape is truly sparkling.

On the other hand, the west side is dominated by a sandy coastline and machair (the fertile coastal grassland bordering the sand dunes). The main road runs down the middle of this chain of islands from Lochmaddy to Lochboisdale.

North and south Uist both have nature reserves and are full of ancient monuments, many dating back thousands of years. Also, a number of black and white houses can be found of these islands.

This part of the Hebrides has a beauty and charm of its own and can be very challenging but rewarding at the same time, as the photogenic landscape can change in an instant. The mood and atmosphere the weather systems create are out of this world. The sand dunes never look the same as the wind changes their patterns constantly.

This part of the Western isles doesn’t get many visitors, especially in March and the weather is usually calm and friendly, although cold and this makes it an ideal candidate for landscape photography courses. The place can be all yours.

Wild, rugged, weathered, geologically abused, tranquil and highly photogenic under the right light? Oh yes, you better believe it. This 5 night staying in the area, will be a once in a lifetime experience. You have been warned though, once there, you want to go back again. Do not hesitate to book this course, have a look at the pictures from the area and book it in advance. Spaces will not be available for very long.
